New Map Designs

I found the most awesome book at Half Price Books the other day. It's called "Mapping the World" and is filled with gorgeous maps and drawings, many ancient. It brings me back to my art history days. Oh how I love poring over pictures of illuminated manuscripts. The ancient maps are so much more detailed and have pictures of people, animals, castles, etc. Not as useful as today's maps for actually finding out how to get somewhere, but so pretty!

The picture is of some envelopes I made using pages from the book.

How many times have you wished you had something like this???? Although for me, there might have been more occasions where people would put them on my car... Darn parallel parking! I am getting better though now that I have a smaller car and some more practice!

Valentine Contest

I would love to enter this contest at Cool Mom Picks! I am having flashbacks to the good old days in elementary school when we would all make and decorate valentine mailboxes and spend hours agonizing whether or not the little smiley face that cute boy drew on my valentine meant if he liked me or if he just liked smiley faces. The days when all it took to be the best valentine in the class was to be the kid who attached lollipops to their cards. Here I go to draw some valentines!

Yay! My new shop is FINALLY up and running...now I just have to keep making things to post and hope for that first sale. From what I've read on the Etsy forums that could take a while but hopefully with enough new items going up and maybe some love from the relatives I can get going!

Spring is here!

Yay Spring!!! I am so ready to shed the wool coats and scarves and bring out the sunglasses and my baby blue purse. Here is a photo that I took last year at the Tulip Festival in Mt. Vernon. I love tulips and this picture just says spring to me. One more month and then I will be spring cleaning the house and getting a much needed refreshing. Hopefully my next place will have some more room for an art area where ink whimsy can take over!

Wow, I suck at blogging. I have been extremely remiss in not posting anything for over a month. I blame it on my having a job now, woo hoo! In honor of the color class I am currently taking, here is a cool after image. Stare at the dot in the middle of the flag for 30 seconds or so and look at a white background, crazy!!

I love this fabric site. Such cute designs and some are not nearly as expensive as other places. Once I learn to sew something that is not shaped like a square, I will have to get some!

Christmas Break

The snow has been fun but I was very excited when it all melted. But now its snowing again. Dang. At least I got to take lots of ridiculously cute photos of my dog in the snow. Sadie loves romping around but it even got to be too much for her. I guess it gets pretty hard to run around when your legs are so short that when you jump in the snow, you land with your face and stomach right in it.

a new linocut...finally

As much time free time I've had the last month being unemployed, you would think I would have a mountain of linoblocks. Here is my latest one I made to print notecards for the boy. I think I like it more than he does (I guess boys don't really send cards to their friends). Whatever, the great thing about lino blocks is once you have made it, you can use it over and over again. Bulldogs galore!

I have been following the Ugly Pillow Contest at Design Sponge. Hilarious. I noticed that my good friend Frantic Pants is also following the contest :). In her honor, I have posted two really non-ugly pillows from 2 Modern that remind me of her. Too bad they are so freakin expensive.

Or maybe that is exactly why I love Jeff Koons. He has managed to make a career out of ridiculous images like this one that make no sense and yet always bring a smile to my face when I see them. my first sewing project

I am very excied to start my new hobby, sewing! After a few hours spent with my mom learning how to wind bobbins, thread the machine, and sew in reverse, I have created my first sewn article (not counting my "halloween centerpiece"). The boy is currently enjoying his new, although slightly misshapen, Seahawks pillow! Thanks to my grandad's wife for the hand-me-down sewing machine and my good friend Frantic Pants for the inspiration. Hopefully in the near future I will be tackling a non-square item.

During the last few weeks, I find most of my time is spent going on interviews, stressing about interviews, and looking for more interviews to go for. Sadly, this has put a damper on my blogging and my pattern making. Frantic Pants, you put me to shame with your recent frequent updates to your blog. I enjoy my mid-morning breaks from searching craigslist for jobs spent reading your highly entertaining posts. I guess what I'm getting at is....I hate looking for jobs!!! It is not fun!!! I would much rather be spending my time creating new patterns and thinking of new ideas for linocuts. Here I have shown one of the two patterns (really? only 2? sad) that I have made the last couple weeks. Hopefully once my job search is done (please please let it be soon), I will have more energy to devote to my true love, crafts!!

Sewing

This whole sew my own curtains thing is apparently more complicated than I thought. First of all, I have no idea how much fabric to buy. The lady at the store tells me I need 13 yards which seems like a lot and will cost me more than just buying some premade curtains. Secondly, once I got to the store, I realized I should have got out the sewing machine as I have no idea if I have any bobbins or thread or anything. So, it looks like the sheets on my windows will stay up for a little while longer. On a happier note, I found a great book at the half-price bookstore that tells me how to calculate how much fabric I need and other helpful tips. 13 yards seems like an awful lot of cloth for two small windows...

Thanks to the influence of my good friend and author of frantic pants, I now have a blog! Hopefully soon it will look pretty and be filled with all my meandering thoughts about crafting. Some crafting projects I hope to accomplish soon:

1. Replacing the fitted sheet on my window with an actual curtain that I will sew on my "new" sewing machine
2. Find some good paper to start using my linocuts on
3. Organize the disaster in my dining room that is masquerading as a crafting room
